Long trails usually arrive as one continuous track. The Section Planner turns that single line into your actual days: drag markers onto the route where each day ends, and Pack Hiker cuts the track into sections with accurate distance, ascent and descent for each.
Placing Your Splits
- Open the Section Planner tab and choose a route.
- Click the map to drop a split marker where a day ends — a campsite, hut or road crossing. Markers snap onto the route line, so they always sit exactly on the track.
- Drag markers to fine-tune. The sections between markers update live, each showing its distance and climb, so you can immediately see whether day three is secretly a 28 km monster.
If your GPX file came with embedded waypoints (campsites, water…), they're shown on the planner map for reference — great signposts for where days should end.
From Sections To Itinerary Days
Once the sections look like sensible days, assign each one to a day of the itinerary. From then on sections behave like routes everywhere: they appear on that day's card and map, count toward the day's stats, show on the Overview map in walking order, and are included in the PDF export and safety brief.
Tip: Section boundaries are yours to revisit — if the group decides to shorten day two, move the marker and the neighbouring sections rebalance.
Good To Know
- Per-section stats use the same elevation filtering as whole routes, so a route's sections always add up to sensibly-matching totals.
- The Section Planner needs a live connection — it's one of the few pages that doesn't work offline.
- Not using it? The hike owner or a co-admin can hide the Section Planner tab for the hike (hike settings) to keep the tab bar tidy.
